#HB5VirtualVoyage: How has the Homeward Bound leadership journey influenced you so far?

Where to even begin?! My Homeward Bound leadership journey has been very rewarding so far. Here are three aspects that have particularly inspired me:

Homeward Bound is about connection and togetherness. What an amazing group of talented, intelligent, and strong women this is! Their passion and commitment are inspiring, motivating, and downright infectious. I am amazed every day at their support, encouragement, and collaborative attitude. Through this teamwork, I have contributed to a book chapter on Antarctica and co-signed a Nature paper on the protection of Antarctica. I am also a member of several working groups. This is such a strong network of women and it gives me hope for the future: Because we are stronger together.

Homeward Bound is about stepping out of your comfort zone. In learning how to become a purposefully visible leader, I have had to learn to step outside of my comfort zone. Let’s face it, nobody likes the vulnerability that comes with it. But if there is one important message I have learnt through the programme, it is that by being visible, open, and authentic, though it makes you more vulnerable, it also makes you stronger and more connected to your audience and network. I have thus tried to be more present on social media, have taken part in recordings for the podcast Discomfort Zone by Roshni Sharma, and have even recorded my very own episode for the podcast Storytellers of STEMM by Rachel Villani. Crowdfunding to finance my place in this programme was also another big step out of my comfort zone.

Homeward Bound is about leadership. The inward journey to explore our strategic capability and develop a leadership mindset and style has been incredible. We ponder with insatiable hunger for knowledge on all imaginable topics ranging from women in STEMM, leadership styles, gender inequality, systemic biases, cultural diversity, environmental protection, and much more. The constructive discussions have been extremely enriching and have sparked in me the ever-growing desire to lead for a better future. If you are unaware of the inequalities and biases we find ourselves confronted with, have a look at the Gender Factsheet published by Homeward Bound in 2020: https://homewardboundprojects.com.au/gender-fact-sheet/

Do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions about the Homeward Bound leadership programme or want to know more about careers in STEMM!
